French onion soup

Ingredients

  • 5 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 4 cups beef broth (for this recipe I make it myself using the knorrs beef bouillon)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 1/2 tbsp lard
  • 1 tbsp oil (olive oil or veg)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Shredded cheese NOTE this recipe traditionally uses Gruyère cheese but since this recipe sorta goes against all the traditions I’m using a mix of mozzarella and Parmesan 👍

Instructions

In a large pot heat up your lard and oil over low heat then toss in your onions add your sugar and salt place a lid on top and let this cook for 20 minutes covered stirring occasionally.

Once that’s done go ahead and add your minced garlic take that lid off and cook your onions until they are nice and golden brown they will be super soft at this point so be careful and don’t mess with the heat we want caramelized not burnt. They should look like this…

We want caramelized not browned this can take time about 45 minutes so just be patient.

Once those onions are nice and caramelized were going to add our flour give it a good o’l mix add in our beef broth pop the lid back on and cook this for another 20 minutes.

While this is cooking I like to preheat my oven to 375°F or I believe 190°C.

Once your soup is done place it into oven safe bowls put some of the cheese mixture on top and toss it into the oven for 7-10 minutes and you’re done.

Hope you enjoy this recipe I did my best to give you a non compromised flavor while avoiding all alcoholic ingredients traditionally used. If you’d did enjoy this recipe let me know down below.
